First day(s) of school

2010 April 6
by will

Yesterday was the first day of school at my home school. Nothing terribly exciting happened. I wore a suit (when I didn’t have to) and spent the day like every other day I’ve spent here during Spring Break. Studying Japanese and screwing around with a guitar that I borrowed from the music room. The first day of school was really only for the returning students (I’ll get to more of that in a second). They showed up to school, had a ceremony and left at lunch time. And most of them had their club activities too.

Today will be the same except that the ceremony will be for the first year students that will be spending the next 3 years of their lives here at Hokota 1st. Oh, and parents will be here too. Will it be interesting? I’ll bet my liver that it’ll be as interesting as watching paint dry on a lazy summer day. That’s pretty much how I feel about ceremonies here in Japan now that I’ve experienced it firsthand. I’m sure it’s great for the students and their parents (and the teachers who actually do stuff) but for me, all I’ll be doing is standing at the back of the gym thinking about doing cartwheels and somersaults. Seriously!! Maybe I’ll actually do some today…
